What is Cronos (CRO)?
Comprehensive guide to Cronos - the smart contract platform powering the Crypto.com ecosystem.
Introduction
Cronos (CRO) is the native cryptocurrency and smart contract platform of the Crypto.com ecosystem. It enables fast, low-cost transactions and is fully compatible with Ethereum, making it easy for developers to port their applications.
CRO serves multiple purposes within the Crypto.com ecosystem: it's used for transaction fees on the Cronos blockchain, staking rewards, and provides benefits on the Crypto.com platform including reduced trading fees and enhanced card rewards.
History and Background
Crypto.com was founded in 2016 in Hong Kong by Kris Marszalek and a team of fintech entrepreneurs. The CRO token was originally launched in 2018, and the Cronos blockchain (then called Crypto.org Chain) was developed to provide a scalable foundation for the ecosystem.
In November 2021, Crypto.com launched the Cronos mainnet, an EVM-compatible blockchain that runs parallel to the Crypto.org Chain. This enabled smart contracts and DeFi applications within the ecosystem.
The company gained significant visibility through major sponsorship deals, including naming rights for the Los Angeles arena (formerly Staples Center), and partnerships with major sports leagues and events.
Technology
Cronos is built on the Cosmos SDK and uses Tendermint consensus, providing:
- EVM Compatibility: Full compatibility with Ethereum smart contracts and tools
- High Throughput: Capable of processing thousands of transactions per second
- Low Fees: Transaction costs are significantly lower than Ethereum mainnet
- Interoperability: IBC protocol enables cross-chain communication with other Cosmos chains
The network uses Proof of Authority (PoA) consensus with a set of validators, providing fast finality while maintaining decentralization through the validator selection process.
Use Cases
- Crypto.com Card: Stake CRO for enhanced card benefits including cashback and rewards
- Exchange Benefits: Reduced trading fees when staking CRO on Crypto.com Exchange
- DeFi: Growing ecosystem of DeFi protocols on Cronos blockchain
- NFTs: Crypto.com NFT marketplace and Cronos-based NFT projects
- Staking: Earn rewards by staking CRO on the network

Investment Considerations
CRO's value is closely tied to Crypto.com's success as a platform. The company's large marketing spend and user growth have driven adoption, but investors should consider both the benefits and risks of this centralized association.
